چکیده

Radio Resource Management (RRM) algorithms are needed to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS), to maintain the planned coverage area, and to offer high capacity. The family of RRM algorithms can be divided into Handover Control, Power Control, Admission Control, Load Control and Packet Scheduling functionalities. Using the existing RRM algorithms in 3rd Generation (3G) Cellular Networks supporting multicast and broadcast multimedia services (MBMS) might prove inefficient due to the new aspects introduced. Here, we focus our research on Handover Control. We investigate and highlight the inefficiencies caused when a mobile terminal is receiving an MBMS service and performs a handover using the existing Handover Control approach. We therefore propose and evaluate a specific MBMS Handover approach to compensate for the issues highlighted in our analysis. In this paper, using a different approach, we extend previous work to Non-homogeneous cell boundaries and Non-Line of Sight transmission.

MBMS Handover control: A new approach for efficient handover in MBMS enabled 3G cellular networks

Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) is a new unidirectional (downlink only) Point-to-Multipoint bearer service introduced in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) Release 6 specifications. The advantage of this kind of bearer service compared to legacy UMTS bearer services is that it enables the efficient usage of radio-network and core-network resources (by allowing the re...

Enabling IEEE 802.21 in a B3G Cellular Experimental Network

Recent trends in mobile networking show the large scale emergence of multimode mobile terminals, with the capability to simultaneously or sequentially attach to conceptually different access networks. To cope with this, they require an abstracted framework for mobility management and control. A solution to this issue, called Media Independent Handover Services, is standardized by the 802.21 gro...

MBMS - IP Multicast/Broadcast in 3G Networks

In this article, the Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS) as standardized in 3GPP is presented. With MBMS, multicast and broadcast capabilities are introduced into cellular networks. After an introduction into MBMS technology, MBMS radio bearer realizations are presented. Different MBMS bearer services like broadcast mode, enhanced broadcast mode and multicast mode are discussed. Vertical Handover Support in Coordinated Heterogeneous Radio Access Networks

Beyond 3G wireless networks must be able to coordinate services within a diverse network environment. One of the most challenging problems for coordination is vertical handover (VHO), which is the decision for a mobile node to change the point of attachment between different types of networks. While traditional handover is based on received signal strength comparisons, VHO must evaluate additio...
